How Can I Recover Permanently Deleted Files?

I accidentally permanently deleted some important files and can’t find them in the Recycle Bin. Is there a reliable way to recover these files without overwriting or damaging the data?

Recovery from a traditional hard drive is often possible if the deleted space has not been reused, while recovery from an SSD can be much less likely because TRIM may clear the deleted data automatically.

Stop using the affected drive immediately. Don’t download recovery software to it, install updates, copy files, or keep browsing if it is your system drive. Every write can overwrite the sectors containing the deleted files. If possible, shut the computer down, connect the drive to another computer, and scan it from there.

Check backups and synced storage first. Windows File History, Previous Versions, OneDrive, Google Drive, and Dropbox may keep deleted files or older copies even when the local Recycle Bin is empty. If that turns up nothing, a recovery tool such as Disk Drill data recovery software can scan the drive. Install it on a different drive and save anything recovered to a different drive as well. Use the preview feature before paying, since finding a filename does not always mean the file contents are intact.

For highly valuable files, avoid repeated scans or repair attempts and contact a professional recovery service. That is especially important if the drive clicks, disconnects, runs extremely slowly, or is not detected consistently. Software can help with accidental deletion, but it cannot safely fix physical damage, and continued use may make professional recovery harder.

Make a sector-by-sector image of the drive before running recovery scans, especially if the files are irreplaceable. Scan the image rather than the original disk, since repeated tools can stress the drive or alter metadata.

Don’t install Disk Drill or save recovered files onto the affected drive, since that can overwrite what you’re trying to recover. If it’s an SSD with TRIM enabled, recovery may already be impossible even with a drive image.

Half the reason people never recover their files is that they panic and keep clicking around on the same drive. So the ‘stop using it’ advice is the single most important thing in this whole thread. Everything else is secondary.

That said, the drive imaging tip from @greentiger is solid in theory but a bit much for most home users. Making a full sector image means you need a second drive at least as big as the one you’re recovering from, plus a tool that can handle a failing disk without choking. If your files are just some deleted work documents and the drive is healthy, you’re probably fine scanning it directly once, carefully. If the drive is making noise or dropping out, then yeah, imaging first makes sense, or honestly just hand it to a pro before you make it worse.

@xepicloopx is right about SSDs and TRIM, and I’d go further. On a modern Windows machine with an internal SSD, deleted files are often gone within seconds, not minutes. TRIM runs fast. So if that’s your setup, temper your expectations before you spend hours scanning. External SSDs over USB sometimes don’t get TRIM commands passed through, so those occasionally recover better, but don’t count on it.

On Disk Drill or any similar tool, the free scan and preview is the part that actually matters. Run the scan, look at what previews correctly, and only then decide if it’s worth paying. A recovered filename with a garbage or zero byte preview means the data is already overwritten, and no amount of paying unlocks that. Treat the recovery software as a way to check what’s salvageable, not a magic restore button.

One thing everyone skipped: check whether the files ever lived somewhere else. Email attachments, a phone that synced photos, a work server, an old backup drive in a drawer. People burn a weekend on recovery software when a copy was sitting in their Sent folder the whole time.
