How do I disable Incognito Mode on iPhone?

Accidentally activated Incognito Mode on my iPhone, and I’d like to turn it off. Not sure of the steps to disable it and get back to browsing in normal mode. I need help to switch back. Any advice?

Oh no, the dreaded Incognito Mode strikes again! Don’t worry, escaping its dark clutches is easier than it seems. You accidentally activated it while browsing, huh? Happens to the best of us. Here’s the fix:

  1. Open Safari (duh, that’s where the mischief begins).
  2. Down at the bottom of the screen, you’ll see these two little squares on top of each other—tap them.
  3. You’ll enter the tab view, possibly seeing nothing but a black (incognito) wasteland. Now look up—it says “Private” somewhere screaming your sins. Click that.
  4. Select “Tabs” or “1 Tab” or basically anything NOT private mode.
  5. Congrats! You’re now back in wholesome, fully visible internet territory.

And that’s literally it. No drama. No ‘Oops, I deleted my browser history!’ moments. You’re back to casual surfing outside the shadows. Might wanna avoid hitting Private Mode again unless you’re…uh…researching really niche topics.

Honestly, it’s funny how easy it is to stumble into Incognito Mode and then feel like you’re stuck in some secret underworld of your browser. While @himmelsjager broke down Safari’s escape route nicely, I’ll toss in another angle: why not just adjust your browsing habits so you don’t accidentally end up in Private Mode again? (Yes, I hear the flaw in that logic already—human error exists.)

If you’re on Safari, they nailed the steps, but let’s not forget the irony that Apple makes this “special mode” stupidly easy to enter but not-so-obvious to switch back. If you’re really struggling or paranoid about it happening again, you could just disable the feature entirely. If you use Screen Time on your iPhone, here’s a more “permanent” fix:

  1. Go to Settings and tap Screen Time.
  2. Select Content & Privacy Restrictions.
  3. Enable the toggle if it’s not already on, then tap Content Restrictions.
  4. Under Web Content, choose Limit Adult Websites.

This will effectively disable Private Browsing Mode and keep accidental ‘ventures’ into murky digital territory at bay. Definitely an extreme measure, though… depends how much trust you have in your own fingers.

Side note: maybe rethink calling it “Private Mode” when it automatically sets off everyone’s Suspicion Radar. You’re probably just looking up boring stuff like “weather in Toledo,” right?
