I’m trying to cut down the number of apps on my phone because storage is tight and my screen feels cluttered. I can only keep five, and I’m stuck on which one matters most for everyday use. I need help figuring out which app is truly essential and why, especially for productivity, communication, or daily life.
If I had to pick the one app with the highest daily value, it would be maps.
Reason is simple. It solves a real problem fast. Driving, walking, transit, traffic, finding stores, checking hours, sharing location. One app covers a lot of ground. For most people, it saves time every week.
My top 5 would be:
- Messages
- Maps
- Password manager
- Camera
- Banking
If your phone storage is tight, delete heavy apps first. Social apps, food delivery, shopping, games. Most of those work fine in a browser anyway. Keep the apps you use at least 4 to 5 times a week. If an app sits there for a month, dump it. Easy rule, tbh.
If I only got one app, I’d probably keep a password manager over Maps, honestly. Slight disagreement with @hoshikuzu there.
Reason: losing maps is annoying. Losing access to email, banking, work logins, bills, and 2FA backups is a full-on disaster. A password manager is the keyring to basically your whole digital life. Without it, every other app starts becoming useless real fast.
My 5 would be:
- Password manager
- Messages
- Maps
- Camera
I’d actually cut banking before email, because most bank stuff can be handled in a browser if needed, and some banking apps are weirdly bloated anyway. Same for shopping apps. Delete em first. They just sit there begging for attention lol.
My rule is less about “used 4 to 5 times a week” and more like:
- does it save me in an emergency
- does it unlock other accounts
- can the mobile website replace it
If yes to browser replacement, the app goes. Easy. Kinda brutal, but it works.
I’d keep Maps as the non-negotiable one, not the password manager. Slightly different from @hoshikuzu and the other take here.
Why? Because when you’re out, lost, low on battery, or trying to get somewhere important, Maps solves an immediate real-world problem fast. A password manager is critical, yeah, but if you mostly stay logged in, it’s not the app that saves your day minute to minute.
My survival 5:
- Maps
- Messages
- Camera
- Password manager
- Browser
I’d actually keep a browser over email. Hot take, but email apps are replaceable. A good browser covers email, banking, shopping, forums, and random one-off tasks without eating extra storage.
Pros for keeping this setup:
- fewer duplicate apps
- saves storage
- less notification clutter
- browser replaces a ton
Cons:
- some sites are worse than native apps
- password manager autofill can be clunkier in browser
- offline features may be weaker
So for me, the first cuts are social, shopping, food delivery, and brand-specific apps. Keep the tools, ditch the temptations.
